BMW may no longer represent the pinnacle of driver engagement, but its 2020 8-series shows it can build a top-notch grand tourer. Available as a coupe or convertible, the big two-door Bimmer rides with a smoothness and quietness that befits its prodigious price tag. A pair of refined and responsive powertrains helps expedite its passengers to their destination, and its well-sorted chassis provides enough agility to enthrall the driver. Although its sloping roofline hinders the view out back, the interior is an expertly crafted space that can be filled with the finest features and materials. The 2020 BMW 8-series won’t stun onlookers with its styling, but its presence undoubtedly commands respect.
It’s hard to find the comparatively subdued 2020 8-series more desirable than the absolutely gorgeous Lexus LC. However, that changes once you’re behind the wheel, especially with the M850i’s delightfully powerful twin-turbo V-8. As such, we’d recommend that model in convertible form. While it costs an extra $10,000, that money is well spent when its dropped top opens up the otherwise confined-feeling cabin. In order to avoid matching the lofty price tag of the BMW M8, which we review separately, we’d be smart with our selected options.
